Reckless driver behaviors that increase the risk of side swipes

On Behalf of | Aug 24, 2025 | Car Accidents |

Side-swipe accidents are one of the most prevalent types of collisions on the road. These accidents often result in significant vehicle damage and sometimes serious injuries. Unlike head-on or rear-end crashes, side swipes can happen quickly and unexpectedly.

Because of this, they often leave drivers with little to no time to react to the sudden changes in traffic. Understanding the reckless behaviors that commonly lead to these accidents is important in helping to ensure safer driving habits and reducing the risk of collisions.

1. Distracted driving

When drivers divert their attention away from the road, they may unintentionally drift into another lane. Drivers can easily get distracted if they choose to multitask behind the wheel. A distracted driver may not notice vehicles in adjacent lanes, creating a dangerous situation. Staying fully focused on the road and avoiding multitasking are critical to helping ensure that vehicles remain within their lanes and do not unintentionally collide with others.

2. Aggressive lane changes

Drivers who weave through traffic without signaling or checking blind spots significantly increase the likelihood of side swipes. An aggressive lane change leaves little room for error, especially in heavy traffic where vehicles are closely spaced. Failing to signal or rushing to cut off another car can cause unexpected contact between vehicles. Responsible driving means using turn signals, checking mirrors and taking time to make safe lane changes.

3. Driving under the influence

An impaired driver may have a hard time maintaining a steady lane position, making side swipes much more likely. Driving under the influence not only endangers the impaired driver but also puts every other road user at risk. Avoiding alcohol or drugs before driving is vital in helping to ensure safety and preventing accidents caused by impaired lane control.

Side swipe accidents often happen because of preventable, reckless behaviors. As such, accident survivors who encounter these collisions should enlist legal support to hold the reckless driver who caused the collision accountable for their actions.
