15-year-old dies in construction accident

by | Jul 10, 2019 | Construction Site Accident Injuries |

Every year, thousands of teenagers nationwide, including Tennessee, secure jobs to earn some money during the summer break. Those who enter the construction industry as inexperienced rookies might not receive adequate safety training — often with devastating consequences. Inadequate safety protocols might have led to a recent construction accident that caused the death of a 15-year-old roof worker.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration mandates that employers must protect all employees, including temporary and teen workers, against known hazards. Sadly, this law appears to have been disregarded at a construction site in a neighboring state. Reportedly, the young worker was working on a roof when an unsupported section collapsed and caused him to fall approximately 40 feet.

The teenager succumbed to fatal injuries, and the police reported it as an accident with no crime being suspected. However, a spokesperson for the police says personal protective equipment was present on the site, but it appears the roof workers were not using it. An investigation is ongoing.

Losing a 15-year-old in a construction accident must be unbearable for the surviving loved ones. Although no amount of money could bring their child back, the parent or guardians of this teenager can claim death benefits through the state-regulated workers’ compensation system. Benefits will cover the costs of a funeral and burial and lost wages to ease the financial burden. When a work-related accident injures or kills a Tennessee worker, an experienced workers’ compensation attorney can provide valuable support and guidance throughout the administrative and legal proceedings to obtain maximum benefits under applicable laws.
